Hyaluronic acid (HA) has become one of the most marketed ingredients in skincare. You'll find it in serums, moisturizers, eye creams, and even some cleansers. But there's a detail most brands don't explain: not all hyaluronic acid behaves the same way. The difference comes down to molecular weight - and it fundamentally changes what the ingredient actually does on your skin.
What is hyaluronic acid?
Hyaluronic acid is a glycosaminoglycan - a type of polysaccharide - naturally found in the skin, joints, and connective tissue. In the skin, it sits primarily in the dermis, where it binds water molecules and contributes to volume and firmness. One gram of HA can hold up to 6 liters of water, which is why it's used as a humectant in cosmetics.
As we age, the skin's natural HA content declines. The HA used in cosmetics is produced through bacterial fermentation and is chemically identical to the HA found in human skin.
What is molecular weight?
Molecular weight (MW) is measured in daltons (Da) and describes the size of a molecule. In cosmetic formulations, hyaluronic acid is available across a wide range of molecular weights - from very large (high MW) to very small (low MW), and even oligomeric (ultra-low MW) forms.

High molecular weight HA (1,000 kDa+)
Large HA molecules are too big to penetrate the skin. Instead, they form a film on the surface that traps moisture and prevents transepidermal water loss (TEWL). This gives an immediate smoothing and plumping effect - you feel it right away. However, the effect is temporary and entirely superficial. The moment you wash your face, the film is gone.
High MW HA also has anti-inflammatory properties and is generally well-tolerated, making it suitable for reactive skin types.
Low molecular weight HA (10–100 kDa)
Smaller HA fragments can penetrate into the upper layers of the epidermis - the stratum spinosum and granulosum. This deeper delivery allows them to hydrate from within the skin rather than just on the surface. The results build over time with consistent use.
The trade-off: there is some evidence that very low molecular weight HA (<50 kDa) can trigger mild inflammatory responses at high concentrations, as the immune system may recognize small HA fragments as a signal of tissue damage. In normal cosmetic concentrations, this is unlikely to be a practical concern, but it's a reason to be cautious of extremely high-concentration products using only ultra-low MW fractions.
Oligomeric HA (<10 kDa)
The smallest forms of HA can reach the dermis, where native HA is produced and stored. These ultra-short chains may stimulate fibroblast activity - cells responsible for producing collagen and HA - and could offer longer-term structural benefits. Research in this area is ongoing and mostly industry-funded, so results should be interpreted carefully.
What formulations typically use
Most commercial serums use high MW HA for immediate feel and marketing appeal. Premium formulations increasingly blend multiple molecular weights - sometimes two or three - to target different skin layers simultaneously. When a product claims to contain "multi-weight" or "multi-molecular" hyaluronic acid, it means exactly this.
How to read it on the label
The INCI name for hyaluronic acid is Sodium Hyaluronate (the sodium salt form, which is more stable). You may also see:
- Hydrolyzed Hyaluronic Acid - enzymatically broken down into smaller fragments (low MW)
- Hyaluronic Acid - the free acid form, typically high MW
- Sodium Acetylated Hyaluronate - acetylated form, claimed to have improved skin affinity
- Hyaluronate Crosspolymer - crosslinked HA used in some long-wear formulations
Unfortunately, INCI names alone don't tell you the molecular weight. If the brand doesn't disclose it on packaging or their website, there's no reliable way to know from the ingredient list alone.
The practical takeaway
For immediate surface hydration and barrier support: high MW HA is effective and well-tolerated. For deeper, longer-term hydration: look for products with a blend of molecular weights, or those that specifically mention low MW or hydrolyzed HA. And as always: the concentration matters. A product that lists sodium hyaluronate 20th on a 30-ingredient list contains very little of it.
